Contacting the Dead in the Electronic Age

No one can deny that computers and electronics have revolutionized life on this planet. There are electronic controls and computer chips in everything from the small appliances that toast our bread to the cars we drive, and make possible myriad forms of new entertainment, from DVDs to video games and iPods. We’re just at the beginning of this remarkable revolution.

And now many serious and casual researchers are claiming that some of this gadgetry can be useful in a quite unexpected way: to contact the dead… or at least allow the dead to contact us.

Obviously, these claims are highly controversial. They make many assumptions: that there is life after death, that the dead are interested in contacting us, and that they have the means by which to do so. Assuming all that, many people experimenting with electronic voice phenomena (EVP) and instrumental transcommunication (ITC) say they have received messages from “the other side” through tape recorders, VCRs, televisions, telephones and even computers. It seems we may no longer exclusively need Ouija boards, psychics and mediums to contact dear deceased Uncle Harold… just turn on the TV instead. Yes, even spiritulism has entered the electronic age.

These phenomena have manifest themselves since the appearance of the instruments themselves. EVP (electronic voice phenomena), for example, has been reported for well over 30 years: unexplained voices heard faintly on magnetic recording tape. It’s said that even Thomas Edison experimented with devices for spirit communication. Investigators around the world are trying to get to the bottom of EVP and ITC, endeavoring to explain, in one way or another, how these voices are encoded on audio tape, how unexplained images appear on video tape and TV screens, where phantom phone calls come from and how computers can relay messages from “the beyond.”

Here are some interesting cases of EVP and ITC, about which you can read more at the links provided:

Audio tape

Two of the pioneers of EVP were Konstantin Raudive, a Swedish psychology professor, and Fredrich Juergenson, a Swedish filmmaker. In the late 1950s, Raudive began to hear words recorded on blank audio tape and eventually made more than 100,000 recordings. (A CD of some of this recordings is even available.) Around the same time, Juergenson first captured unexplained voices while taping bird songs outdoors. He continued his research for over 25 years.

Is ITC phenomenon genuine? relates how Belling and Lee, a British laboratory, conducted some experiments in EVP, suspecting that the “spirit voices” were actually caused by ham radio broadcasts bouncing off the ionosphere. The tests were conducted by one of the leading sound engineers in Britain, and when phantom voices were recorded on factory-fresh tape, he was baffled. “I cannot explain what happened in normal physical terms,” he is quoted as saying.

Another interesting case is that of two Italian Catholic priests who in 1952 were trying to record a Gregorian chant, but a wire in their equipment kept breaking. Out of desperation, one of the priests asked his dead father for help. Then, to his amazement, his father’s voice was heard on the tape saying, “Of course I shall help you. I’m always with you.” The priests brought the matter to the attention of Pope Pius XII, who reportedly accepted the genuineness of the phenomenon.

Today, many individuals and groups are experimenting with and gathering EVPs. Dave Oester and Sharon Gill of the International Ghost Hunters Society travel the US collecting EVPs from various haunted sites, and they post many of their recordings on their site.

Radio

In 1990, two research teams (one in the U.S. and one in Germany) claimed to have independently developed devices that allowed them to talk to the dead. Using a modified form of ham radio that receives 13 different frequencies at once, the researchers claimed to have held conversations with several people who have passed on to another plane of existence. Dr. Ernst Senkowski, in Germany, said that he contacted a Hamburg dockmaster who died in 1965. “We verified this information,” Senkowski said. “He told us he was well and happy.”

In the U.S., George Meek, director of the MetaScience Foundation in Franklin, N.C., said that more than 25 times he has talked to Dr. George J. Mueller, an electrical engineer who died in 1967 of a heart attack. “Dr. Mueller told us where to find his birth and death certificate records” and other details, Meek said. Supposedly, it all checked out.

TV/VCR

In 1985, according to Instrumental Contact with the Dead?, German psychic Klaus Schreiber started receiving pictures of deceased family members on his television. Sometimes just voices would come across, telling Schreiber how to tune his TV for better reception. When Schreiber died soon after, his own image began to show up on the TV screens of some European ITC researchers.

Some researchers have claimed success in capturing ghost images with an instrumental transcommunication (ITC) set-up. With this technique, a video camcorder, connected to a television, is pointed at the television screen. In other words, the camera is recording the image it is simultaneously sending to the TV, creating an endless feedback loop. The frames of the video are then examined one by one, and sometimes ver distinct human faces can be seen. You’ll find examples here:

Telephone

In January 1996, ITC researcher Adolf Homes received a series of paranormal phone calls, according to Is ITC phenomenon genuine? Reportedly, a female voice said, “This is mother. Mother is going to contact you several times on your phone. As you know, my thoughts are sent in different speech patterns. The vibrational ties with your equipment make our contacts possible…”

Of course, there are also many documented cases of phantom phone calls, or phone calls from the dead. You can read several chilling examples in my article on the subject.

Computer

The seeming ability of entities to make contact through a computer were first noticed in Germany in 1980, according to Electronic Links to Other Dimensions & Entities. A researcher received a spontaneous message that appeared first as a series of letters, then words and finally phrases that referred clearly to a deceased friend of the investigator. Four years later, an English professor claimed to have exchanged messages (supposedly this was not e-mail) for over 15 months with a group of advanced entities living in the year 2019 as well as a man from 1546.

In 1984-85, says Instrumental Contact with the Dead?, Kenneth Webster of England said he received 250 communications via several different computers from a person who lived in the 16th century.

Can we believe such stories? Some are so far out that they should be taken with a megadose of salt. And the field of spiritualism and contact with the dead has always been so rampant with charlatans and fraud that there’s no reason to think that that tradition is not being continued with the assistance of electronic devices. But it’s always best to keep a cautiously open mind and welcome legitimate research into this dark, nebulous region of the paranormal.

Looking for Bigfoot in Indian Country
It has been more than 50 years since the legend of Bigfoot first captured the hearts and imaginations of the American public. It has been more than 50 years of sightings, investigations and debunking. But are we any closer to having proof that can pass scientific muster that this tall, hairy being with gigantic feet exists? No one has the answer to that question, yet some Bigfoot experts have figured out that the best place to get the evidence is in Indian country…

Last days in our haunted house part 2

Any ghosts ready to be busted?
Did a ghost get busted in the cellar?
In a previous post I promised I’d explain what my buddies reactions were to our short “investigation” down in the cellar where I had explained to him about the brief sightings of the shadowy figure and the sensation of being touched by someone or something that wasn’t there. Not to mention the two kittens that had died in that very same cellar for no good reason at all. And a few other incidences that occurred down there.

We had went down in the cellar this past Sunday afternoon (Feb. 1), my buddy brought his EMF meter (yes, I am well aware of the implications using that with electrical conduits etc., in the cellar) and swept the area. In 3 distinct spots where there were NO nearby electrical wires, outlets etc., present, the meter went from .01 up to .05 in one spot. Then from .02 to .04 in the 2nd.

In the 3rd spot, the meter just started to jump all over the place. I personally had said out loud for any entity or presence to please give a sign on the meter that it was indeed in our presence. Within 10 seconds or so, my friends meter started to jump all over the scale and then made the audible alert come on and also made the LED light up to indicate that the meter was pegged up to the highest end of the scale. My friend then said his entire right side of his body (which if it was there, the “entity” would have been on his right side.) started feeling like he was standing in a walk-in freezer.

I called out one more time for this “entity” to please give us one more indication it was indeed there by doing something we could see or hear. The meter again lit up its LED indicator and the audible warning went off. Now, the seconds before, my friend had used the meters sensor wand and swept the SAME area…no visible readings, then the meters alarm went off as well as the LED indicator when I had called out loud for another indication of its presence.

We did not however try for any EVPs unfortunately. I wish we would have…I personally would have been very interested to hear any results on that one!

Very closely shared experiances!

Here’s a clipping of a really interesting story I just found while browsing one of my favorite paranormal sites.

The experiences noted below  are very, very close to what has and is being experienced in the house my wife and I are preparing to move out of. The shooting pain portion of that has been felt by myself, and that just started today (2/3/09) and that is something I have NEVER felt quite like that before. The emotional lows have been experienced often as well…coming on for really no apparent reason. Sure, we all feel depressed sometimes, but when it comes on for literally no reason, and very heavily…it really has to make you wonder. The odors: we’ve smelled other types of smells (perfume: sweet, pungent etc.), not the same as below. As for the EVPs…when I have the time, I will be posting a few select ones for everyone to hear.

Hpi chronicles: west roseville: why is this area so haunted?
Experiences Felt by Investigators:

Some investigators felt a heaviness on their chests. Some investigators felt a heaviness in the air as they entered one of the closets. One investigator felt depression or sadness. Three investigators smelled something foul, almost like stale vinegar. The smell comes and gos. The smell would last maybe a half a minute. Tom felt a headache as he entered the laundry room. He felt a shooting pain around his temple areas, later he would feel lightheaded. Investigator thought she saw a dewy mist go past her. At one point of time, I thought I saw a white fleeting figure by a 2nd floor window, it could have been my mind playing tricks. Robbie felt a brushing warmth that went across her face and later she thought she saw a quick moving shadow.

FINDINGS:

Investigator gets what sounds like the word ‘dodgers’ EVP. The EVP sounded like a man. The word sounded like ‘dodgers’ or ‘dodge her’. Another EVP was what sounded like ‘Moslo’ when the question was asked: ‘Is Anyone Here?’ Moslo could have been a ‘Must Go’. Tammy Straling received EVP that sounds like a woman sighing. Kathy takes a picture in the back room on the first floor that looked like a twisting tornado with a bright light at the base of the tornado. Could this photograph be of a vortex/portal? All EVPs and Kathy’s vortex photo need to be further analyzed. Robbie takes a picture with a black shadow moving across the ceiling. Her 2nd photo shows no shadow moving across ceiling. I had Tom take Robbie back into the same area to try and recreate the photo and the photo could not be recreated.

CONCLUSION:

With the possible EVPs and the unusual vortex photo. This place seems to have possible paranormal activity.

When your home becomes a haven for spirits – part2

There’s several theorys about why certain locations have so much activity going on. One theory is because of family members, friends etc., dieing at that location and those spirits are bound or maybe even trapped there due to a strong tie with the location for whatever reason. The second one is that location has a portal of sorts that allows two way travel if you will, of these spirits or ghosts to come and go at will. Another theory is that perhaps these spirits have some kind of “assignment” or a “duty” to help out the living at that location.

I’m more prone to believe that in our case it’s because of family or loved ones dieing at the location. In our case the 1st theory just might be true here…my father had died in our house back in 1994 from cancer. He chose to come back here and was in his last days, confined to an hospital bed braught here and he was being taken care of by Hospice at that time. I wasn’t here that night when he passed away. The EVPs we have gotten from our house have several indicators that he is indeed one of the spirits that is here. Some of the indicators are that he asked several times where his favorite baseball style hat was (he always wore a light greenish baseball style hat). We have both heard the sound of a bell being rang. When he was able to walk around, my father always sat out in his workshop that’s out back of our house and rang the bell when he needed something. I personaly have heard the EVP and his voice is strong and recognizable!

On many occassions I have smelled the odor of perfume or scented powder that will hover in certain areas in this house and then disappear only to show up in a new area of the house. My mother had passed away back in 2005, but not here, she passed away at a place that cares for senior citizens. My mother had a few favorite perfumes she always wore and a favorite powder she would always ask for. Other smells have been of cig. smoke. My father had been a smoker. Some more recent activity has been dishes moving by themselves, figures that may be male or female show up in webcam video footage and still captures when we run the cam to capture any activity in the room where my father passed away. These figures have been most times full bodied to partial and have distinct features like eyes, hands, legs and head and so on.

Two seperate occassions my wife has woke me up at times of 3am and 4am to tell me the front door has been wide open. Keep in mind that I make sure the front door is shut and the security locks are locked tight. The cats, we have two indoor cats, will seem to watch something that moves from the floor to the ceiling and around the house. I’ve inspected the areas the cats were watching and there were no insects present and so on. There has been a couple of times when I personaly watched one of the cats try to lay down on the couch and then as if something chased it off, lept up and ran off the couch. The same type of behavior was repeated several times…as if something was either playing with the cat or trying to be malicious.

There have been the usual cold spots all over the house, ones that would “hover” from spot to spot. I have felt, more than once, a “breeze” that had shown up when none of the windows were open and this house is quite well insulated too. The breeze would show up in the same room and same area where my father had that hospital bed and where he passed away. Touching on the note of manifestations and how spirits use the environment around us to empower themselves to manifest…we have gone through pack after pack of brand new batteries that would be completely drained within 3 minutes of useing them in a camera or digital recorder throughout this house and outside on our land. We both know this house has multiple spirits because the EVPs we’ve captured have been of childrens voices, adult voices and other types of sounds or voices that simply don’t sound human in nature!

The land on which this house was built has a long history of violence and many other interesting attributes dateing back to the french-indian wars, the first settlers to this region of NY state and more. All of which I’ll be posting on in later parts to this. Not all of this activity at this house been playful either…there have been too many times when the activity has been trying to become less than just nice and pleasant. Too many times, whatever these other entities are, they have tried to cause very prominant feelings of fear and dispare and depression that are experienced in areas such as the stairwell that leads to the celler, over-cross on our land where more than 60 years ago, a family lost everything they had because of a lightning strike that burned down the barn and house where they lived. A residual haunting? Maybe…I’ll hit on why I think it’s not that in a later post.

So has our home become a “portal” of sorts for spirits, or is our house a bona-fide haunted house? There’s much more to all of this and what’s going on here…so keep watch for part 3 to be posted ASAP.
